Coaching- As a Profession
- In games and sports, coaching has already become a pretty sought after and handsomely paying, full time or part time profession.
- In corporate sector also, it is being recognized that some people can take coaching as their full time profession or as a part time key assignment or responsibility along with their other regular jobs.
Definition
Coaching is when you help people win as individuals so that the department (team) can also win. You help your employees (team members) win when you:
- Teach them a new job or skill.
- Explain procedures, standards, strategies and the rules of the game.
- Help them adjust to changes.
- Enhance their careers.

Coaching Process
The coaching process consists of three stages:
- Identify opportunities for setting tasks which
(a) have specific learning targets.
(b) are appropriate and relevant to the subordinate’s job, learning abilities and development needs within the organization.
(c) can be measured and monitored. - Set up monitoring systems.
(a) measure progress against deadlines, skill development.
(b) meet regularly to discuss and solve problems in a non-directive mode. - Measure task achievement against targets.
(a) review performance when the task is complete.
(b) identify blockages and facilitating factors.
(c) jointly determine areas for future development.
